Melamine-faced boards (MFB) are composite panels made by applying a thin layer of melamine resin-impregnated paper to a particleboard, MDF (medium-density fibreboard), or plywood substrate. The melamine layer is typically heat-pressed onto the board, giving it a smooth, durable surface that is resistant to scratches, stains, and moisture to some extent. These boards are commonly used in furniture manufacturing, cabinetry, and interior panelling due to their aesthetic appeal, ease of maintenance, and cost-effectiveness. The melamine surface can come in various colours, patterns, and finishes, mimicking wood grains or offering solid colours, making it versatile for different design styles.
Postform Tops are laminate countertops commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms. These surfaces are made by adhering a decorative laminate layer to a core material, usually MDF or particleboard, and then “postforming” the edges to create a seamless, curved finish. The process allows for both aesthetically appealing and durable results, with the edges being rounded or wrapped, eliminating sharp corners and providing a smooth, continuous surface. Postform tops are available in a wide range of colours, patterns, and finishes, offering an affordable yet attractive solution for both residential and commercial spaces.
Plywood is a type of engineered wood made from thin layers or “plies” of wood veneer, which are glued together with the grain of each layer running in alternating directions. This cross-laminating process gives plywood strength, stability, and resistance to cracking, shrinking, or warping compared to solid wood. It is commonly used in construction, furniture making, cabinetry, and other applications where durable, versatile materials are needed. Plywood comes in various grades and thicknesses to suit different uses, with higher-quality plywood having fewer defects and a smoother surface.
Chipboard, also known as particle board, is a type of engineered wood product made from wood chips, sawdust, and resin that are compressed and heated to form a dense, solid board. It’s commonly used in furniture construction, cabinetry, and as a substrate for laminate flooring. Chipboard is lightweight, cost-effective, and can be easily cut and shaped, but it tends to be less durable and prone to moisture damage compared to other materials like plywood or MDF (medium-density fibreboard). It is often used in applications where strength and appearance are less critical.
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is an engineered wood product made from wood fibres, wax, and resin, which are compressed and heated to form dense, smooth boards. It is known for its fine texture, uniform density, and ability to be easily machined, making it ideal for applications such as furniture, cabinetry, moulding, and panelling. MDF is also preferred for its smooth surface, which can be painted or veneered, and its ability to resist warping and splitting compared to solid wood. However, it can be more prone to moisture damage and is typically not suitable for outdoor use unless specially treated.
